The much loved Haflinger has been an established breed since the 1800ís and orginates from the Tyrol area of Austria and Northern Italy. They take their name from the village of Hafling, and are a cross between the local Tyrol pony and Arab. Always chestnut in colour and with their distinctive flaxen mane and tail, they are sturdy yet energetic, surefooted enough to manage the steep mountain paths in their homeland, yet graceful enough to adapt to dressage and other disciplines under saddle. They are friendly and loveable creatures and are renowned for their sprightly gait and rocking horse canter. They are ideal trail riding horses and though small (usually between 13.2 hh and 15hh) are able to carry an adult with ease.
You can take a carriage ride to explore the local area (or sleigh rides in Winter) or you can learn how to take the reins yourself in various carriages and marathon carriages The riding and carriage-driving instructor Hannes Weitlaner practices the sport of driving at international level. Tuition is given by the three-time Italian champion and participant in the one-horse carriage-driving world championships.
