Markree Castle, Collooney, Sligo
Markree Castle, the Cooper family home for 370 years, has been lovingly restored by the current owner Charles Cooper and his wife Mary to become one of the finest country house hotels in Ireland. Set in a secluded 500 acre estate in County Sligo, peace and relaxation combined with good food, fine wine and old-world charm make a stay at Markree a step back in time.
Markree Castle offers a quiet and relaxing atmosphere for get-away breaks and its location, in the heart of the countryside that inspired the great poet and playwright W.B. Yeats, makes it an ideal home-from-home for longer stays.
A castle since the 14th century, with the most recent redesign taking place in the late 1800s, Markree is a cultural gem where the very finest in Irish Victorian and Georgian architecture is to be seen.
It would be hard to find a more idyllic location for a riding school than the one at Markree Castle in the West of Ireland. A picturesque castle and acres of parkland filled with graceful mature trees surround these stables. They offer a warm and friendly welcome to riders of all abilities, with tailored made programmes to suit all needs. The owner Paul has been involved in horses all his life. From working with horses in different equestrian centres on a national and international level, in riding schools, in dealing and competition yards, he has gained valuable knowledge, experience and dedication along the way. Care and personal attention is given especially to the nervous or inexperienced riders.
The riding centre offers scenic treks, mini or full week trailrides, afterschool club, Semi & private lessons, School Groups & Social Clubs. Summer Pony camps for unaccompanied children and also residential riding courses combined with language courses (English, French, German, for ages 11-18).
